Fantasy Champions League
Champions League starts tomorrow! To spice things up, Fanteam announced €100k guaranteed group stage tournament. Does it have your mouth water yet? Read on to find out who we recommend you build your team around! We really hope this helps you build a squad that takes the European crown!
The tournament over the first 6 game weeks, EXCLUDING play-offs. Managers are allowed 2 free transfers between gameweeks. Every transfer exceeding 2 will cost you -4 points. This allows for more flexibility compared to a usual 1 free transfer between game weeks in traditional season-long fantasy.
No matter the strategy employed - a premium-heavy squad with an eye on pin-point transfers and minimum money on the bench, or a more balanced approach with an eye on rotation - you still have to know who to pick.
We review all the groups, probable starting XI for every team, and give suggestions as to budget-friendly and premium picks so you may assemble a squad even if you can't tell Olympiakos and Galatasaray apart.
Real Madrid: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, F.Mendy; Casemiro, Kroos, Modric; Bale, Benzema, Hazard
PSG: Navas; Kehrer, Marquinhos, T.Silva, Bernat; Gueye, Verratti, Di Maria; Mbappe, Cavani, Sarabia
Galatasaray: Muslera; Mariano, Luyindama, Marcao, Nagatomo; Nzonzi, Belhanda, Seri; Feghouli, Falcao, Babel
Club Brugge: Mignolet; Mata, Deli, Mechele, Sobol; Vormer, Rits, Vanaken, Schrijvers; Tau, Okereke
Real Madrid and PSG are favorites in the group. Real is weak at the back and has expensive defenders. PSG's Navas and the right-back (whoever it turn out to be), priced at 5.0, are good value. Mbappe and Benzema are our weapons of choice in attack being the main goalscorers.
Value: K.Navas (GK, 5.0), Dagba (DEF, 5.0)/Kehrer (DEF, 5.0)
Premium: Benzema (FOR, 9.5), Mbappe (FOR, 11.0)
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Pavard, Süle, Hernandez, Alaba; Kimmich, Tolisso, Alcantara; Gnabry, Lewandowski, Coman
Tottenham: Lloris; Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Sissoko, Winks; Lucas, Eriksen, Son; Kane
Olympiacos: Sa; Elabdellaoui, Meriah, P.Cisse, Tsimikas; Guilherme, Camara; Podence, Valbuena, Masouras; El Arabi
Red Star Belgrade: Borjan; Gobeljic, Degenek, Milunovic, Rodic; Canas, Jovancic; Garcia, Marin, Vukanovic; Boakye
Bavaria and Tottenham are among the favorites here. They are a good choice for both defense and offense. However, besides Kane, it is hard to predict who starts upfront for Tottenham.
Value: Süle (DEF. 5.0), Vertonghen (DEF, 5.0)
Premium: Alaba (DEF, 6.0), Gnabry (MID, 8.0), Lewandowski (FOR, 10.0), Kane (FOR, 10.0)
Man City: Ederson; Cancelo, Stones, Otamendi, B.Mendy; Gundogan, Rodrigo, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling
Atalanta: Gollini; Hateboer, Toloi, Masiello, Djimsiti, Gosens; Freuler, De Roon, Pasalic; Ilicic; Gomez, Zapata
Shakhtar Donetsk: Pyatov; Kryvtsov, Matvienko, Dodo, Ismaily; Stepanenko, Patrick; Marlos, Dentinho, Taison; Moraes
Dinamo Zagreb: Livakovic; Stojanovic, Dilaver, Peric, Leovac; Ademi, Moro; Hajrovic, Olmo, Orsic; Petkovic
Manchester City, the main favorite to win the Champions League, is in quite a weak group. Picking at least two players from the team is a no-brainer. Atlanta is of interest due to its favorable prices and strong attack.
Value: Toloi (DEF. 4.5), Otamendi (DEF, 5.0), Cancelo (DEF, 5.5), Ilicic (MID, 6.0), Mahrez (MID, 8.0)
Premium: Zapata (FOR. 8.5), Jesus (FOR, 8.5), De Bruyne (MID, 10.0), Sterling (MID, 11.0)
Juventus: Szczęsny; Danilo, Bonucci, De Ligt, Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Higuain, Ronaldo
Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Trippier, Hermoso, Gimenez, Lodi; Koke, M.Llorente, Saul, Lemar; Felix, Diego Costa
Leverkusen: Hradecky; L.Bender, Tah, S.Bender, Wendell; Demirbay, Aranguiz, Havertz; Bellarabi, Volland, Bailey
Lokomotiv Moscow: Guilherme; Ignatjev, Höwedes, Corluka, Rybus; Krychowiak, Barinov; Zhemaletdinov, Al.Miranchuk, An.Miranchuk; Smolov
Juventus and Atletico are the clear favorites as is reflected in our picks. Starting Ronaldo from week 2 on is highly recommended.
Value: Lodi (DEF, 5.0)
Premium: A.Sandro (DEF, 6.0), Trippier (DEF. 6.0), Felix (FOR, 8.5), Ronaldo (FOR, 11.5)
Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane
Napoli: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Manolas, Koulibaly, Ghoulam; Allan, Zielinski, F.Ruiz; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne
Salzburg: Stankovic; Farkas, Onguene, Ramalho, Wöber, Ulmer; Szoboszlai, Bernede, Junuzovic; Hee-Chan, Haland
Genk: Coucke; De Norre, Cuesta, Dewaest, Uronen; Berge, Heynen, Piotrowski; Ito, Samatta, Paintsil
The favorites of this group are Liverpool and Napoli. However, because of Napoli's poor defense, a good decision would be to pick only their attacking players. Wöber is worth mentioning because of the fact that he is one of the few 4.0-players who is expected to be in the starting lineup.
Value: Wöber (DEF, 4.0)
Premium: van Dijk (DEF, 6.5), Insigne (MID, 8.5), Mane (MID, 10.5), Salah (MID, 11.5)
Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Roberto, Busquets, De Jong; Messi, Suarez, Griezmann
Dortmund: Bürki; Piszczek, Akanji, Hummels, Schulz; Weigl, Witsel; Sancho, Reus, Brandt; Alcacer
Inter Milan: Handanovic; Candreva, Godin, De Vrij, Skriniar, Asamoah; Barella, Brozovic, Sensi; Laut.Martinez, Lukaku
Slavia Prague: Kolar; Coufal, Kudela, Zeleny, Boril; Husbauer, Stanciu, I.Traore, Masopust; M.Van Buren, Olayinka
There are three teams of interest in this group. Players of Barcelona are expensive which is consistent with their performance. Borussia Dortmund has one of the best attacks of the tournament. Inter has, in turn, nice price for some players, namely - penalty-save master Handanovich and outfield value players in Sensi and Martinez.
Value: Handanovic (GK, 5.0), Sensi (MID, 5.0), Brandt (MID, 6.0), Laut.Martinez (FOR, 6.5)
Premium: Alba (DEF, 7.0), Reus (MID, 8.0), Alcacer (FOR, 8.5), Messi (FOR, 12.0)
Leipzig: Gulasci; Klostermann, Mukiele, Konate, Orban, Halstenberg; Sabitzer, Laimer, Forsberg; Poulsen, Werner
Lyon: Lopes; Tete, Denayer, Anderser, Dubois; Mendes, Tousart, Aouar; B.Traore, M.Dembele, Depay
Benfica: Vlachodimos; Almeida, Dias, Ferro, Grimaldo; Pizzi, Taarabt, Fiorentino, R.Silva; De Tomas, Seferovic
Zenit: Lunev; Smolnikov, Ivanovic, Rakitskiy, D.Santos; Driussi, Barrios, Ozdoev, Zhirkov; Dzyuba, Azmoun
The chances are spread most evenly across this group. Leipzig's goalkeeper at 4.5, full-backs Halstenberg and Grimaldo, and also the best-attacking picks of Leipzig, Lyon and Benfica should draw your attention.
Value: Gulacsi (GK, 4.5), Grimaldo (DEF, 5.0), Forsberg (MID, 6.0), Pizzi (MID, 7.0)
Premium: Halstenberg (DEF, 5.5), Depay (MID, 8.0), M.Dembele (FOR, 8.0), Werner (FOR, 8.5)
Chelsea: Kepa; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rüdiger, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic; Pulisic, Abraham, Mount
Ajax: Onana; Dest, Veltman, Lis.Martinez, Tagliafico; Alvarez, Blind; Promes, Ziyech, Neres; Tadic
Valencia: Cillessen; Wass, Garay, Paulista, Gaya; Torres, Parejo, Coquelin, Guedes; Rodrigo, Gameiro
Lille: Maignan; Celik, Fonte, Magalhaes, Bradaric; Andre, Soumare; Yazici, Ikone, Bamba; Osimhen
Both Valencia, that has recently sacked their head coach, and Lille, that have sold a couple of their important players, are unlikely to win the group. Chelsea and Ajax best players seem worthy of investment.
Value: Rüdiger (DEF, 5.0), Blind (DEF, 5.0), Abraham (FOR, 7.5)
Premium: Tagliafico (DEF, 5.5), Tadic (FOR, 8.5)
