DraftGym Invitational Mini-League Review [GW8]

DraftGym Invitational is a league comprised of 45 managers from different daily fantasy and FPL communities around the globe, who are fighting for glory in season-long single-entry contest on Fanteam.

The lineup can’t be more impressive: CheckJosh - the winner of last year’s season-long Fanteam game from UK with €200,000 for first; michailovic - 2018/19 Fanteam season-long champion and 2nd place finisher in 19/20, daaceofdiamonds - Fanteam’s top-4 earner with €160,000 in profit; TeLLeR - one of the best daily fantasy players with 20,000 tournaments entered and nearly €100,000 in profit, JeanPaul - 3rd place finisher in Fanteam’s season game 20/21. We have to thank ivan4eg – a regular and skillful FanTeam and FPL player – for his huge part in the recruitment.

Other contestants are not to be scoffed at either with loads of DFS experience, tens of thousands Euros won on Fanteam and years of FPL experience. Representing DraftGym in this extremely skillful lineup of managers are Montafly, FPL_Corf, FPLTeachMode, Alexey (KJIIOIIIKA), Rob Pick, Mashulkin and Cryl

DraftGym League Week 8

The Leader

The season is in full swing, and today we are chatting with bartiemich, who sits on top with impressive 575 points after 8 gameweeks.

What do credit your impressive start to?

It’s down to a few good decisions I’ve made. Antonio+Benrahma combo from the start. Going with Gray and Sarr (was deabting between them and Barnes/Traore). Avoiding panic buys and staying calm during the first 8 weeks.

Speaking of panic buys. You didn’t transfer Ronaldo in after GW4, going for Lukaku instead. Weren’t you scared of a potential monster haul against Newcastle?

I was really scared, to be honest. I was positive he would outscore Lukaku (especially, if Lukaku weren’t on penalties). But I didn’t have enough money in the bank and Lukaku’s fixtures were looking too good to ignore.

You have captained Salah 5 times while going once for Lukaku, Mane and Antonio. Do you ever consider differential captaincy picks?

I believe one should play rather conservatively as far as captains are concerned. Don’t overthink it, especially if you are happy with your overall position and don’t need to make up ground.

Your team in this competition is doing great, which can’t be said about your other team in FanTeam million.

With a single-bullet entry like we have in our mini-league, you are always trying to build a more balanced all-around squad. When you enter multiple lineups, the temptation to stack players is higher, which is riskier in itself.

Unfortunately, not everything is going as planned in the Million game. Manchester United defence really let down. I was impressed by their last pre-season game where Maguire finally got a set-piece goal with Shaw assisting. I was sure they would pull off something similar given their kind fixtures. Unfortunately, they failed to deliver a single clean sheet, leave alone attacking returns.

Leicester was another big disappointment. Barnes did close to nothing, Castagne and Pereira stopped featuring regularly, there were no clean sheets. Traore was the final nail in the coffin with his stellar stats and 0 returns. Still, I am not that far behind the leaders and feel I can catch up. Although, with a newborn daughter, I have a lot less time on my hands now).

Corf in The Rearview Mirror

Another consistent manager is hot on the leader's heels. Ross activated his WC before GW8 and got 73 points as the result, putting him just 14.7 points behind the leader.

Best Gameweek Score

awd2 – a prominent DFS manager from Belorus, who is taking a break more or less from fantasy this season due to work-related and personal reasons, managed to get the highest score this week - 79 points. This saw him teleport into the top-10 making up 20+ places with what he describes as "a shit team". I guess it's not that shitty after all.
