Nailing the captaincy in any given gameweek will almost always leave you on a green arrow, but choosing the right captain is not always straightforward. For me, this gameweek has a few exciting captaincy options for those brave enough to steer away from the highly popular Mo Salah. Here they are, my five favourite captaincy options for the armband in the FanTeam One Million game.
M. SALAH (£13.4M) vs AVL (H)
Gameweek 16 Monster Price: £14.9m
Captaincy Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Salah continues to be the safest captaincy option given his huge ownership, with 83% of managers having the Egyptian in their lineup, many with the armband on him permanently. Salah's assist against Wolves in gameweek 15 means he is still yet to blank since gameweek 2 versus Brighton, this consistency is what makes him such a reliable pick for the armband every week. Salah sits comfortably at the top of the high scorers' list with 159.1 points, equating to an impressive average of 10.61 points per game. Salah continues to dominate all attacking stats, he sits at the top for goals scored (13), assists (11), shots (59), shots on target (30), shots inside the box (48), big chances (17), xG (10.97), big chances created (10) and xA (7.03).
Of course, this is the game where Villa boss Steven Gerrard returns to Anfield for the first time since stepping into management. The focus will very much be on the former Reds skipper as he takes his seat in the dugout following an impressive start to life at Villa Park, winning 3 of his opening 4 matches. However, the bookies have Liverpool to comfortably win this weekend, giving them an 80% chance of gaining 3 points and a 48% chance of scoring more than 2.5 goals.
C. RONALDO (£11.2M) vs NOR (A)
Gameweek 16 Monster Price: £13.2m
Captaincy Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Ronaldo was rested against Young Boys in the Champions League midweek which probably means he's very likely to start at Carrow Road this Saturday afternoon. Norwich are much improved under Dean Smith, in fact, they boast the 4th best defensive stats over the last four matches against Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle and Tottenham. However, I anticipate a different story this weekend as they go up against a United team who already looked much improved against Crystal Palace in gameweek 15. So far, Ronaldo has 6 goals and 2 assists in the league, the bookies give him a 56% chance of adding to his goal tally against The Canaries in gameweek 16.
We know that Ronaldo is a flat track bully, his record against lesser teams is incredible. Personally, I see him to be the best captaincy option for anybody looking to step away from Mo Salah this weekend, especially now that he seems to be on penalty duty. Over the past five gameweeks, Ronaldo has attempted 16 shots (4th) despite only making a cameo appearance against Chelsea in gameweek 14. United are given a 67% chance of beating Norwich with a 43% chance of scoring more than 2.5 goals.
M. MOUNT (£7.0M) vs LEE (H)
Gameweek 16 Monster Price: £13.8m
Captaincy Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Mason Mount is owned by just 12.9% of managers so he could be a fantastic differential option this week, especially given that Leeds will be without arguably their most important defensive asset in Kalvin Phillips. The bookies give the Chelsea playmaker a 33% chance of notching himself a goal and a 34% chance of an assist in gameweek 16, whilst giving Chelsea a 75% chance of winning and 45% chance of scoring more than 2.5 goals.
Mount finds himself in a rich vein of form with four returns over the past two gameweeks alone (2 goals, 2 assists). Mount currently sits on 74.9 points which averages 6.24 points per game, he sits on 5 goals and 6 assists. At just £7.0m he could be a great go-to for those looking to hop off Son Heung-Min this week.
D. JOTA (£7.7M) vs AVL (H)
Gameweek 16 Monster Price: £13.9m
Captaincy Rating: ⭐⭐
If you fancy Liverpool to beat Aston Villa comfortably, then you probably won't be considering any other Liverpool asset than Mo Salah, but Diogo Jota continues to impress and hold his position in the team whilst Bobby Firmino is out injured. Jota sits with 84.5 points averaging 6.04 points per game with 8 goals and 1 assist to his name so far this season. Jota goes into the Villa game fully rested after sitting out of Champions League duty midweek, but he'll need to be more clinical than he was against Wolves in gameweek 15 where he missed a couple of big chances. Jota is given a 51% chance of getting himself on the scoresheet this weekend, he's just 46.5% owned, is he worth the gamble?
R. LUKAKU (£10.4M) vs LEE (H)
Gameweek 16 Monster Price: £13.3m
Captaincy Rating: ⭐⭐
Returned from injury in a second-half cameo against West Ham in gameweek 15, whilst increasing his match fitness in Chelsea's Champions League draw against Zenit midweek and getting himself on the scoresheet. It's been a frustrating first half of the season for Lukaku who's played only 640 league minutes, scoring only 3 goals. However, Leeds are without some key players this weekend, so should 'Big Rom' start, then I'd fancy him to cause some real problems and kickstart his campaign.
Lukaku is 7.1% owned making him a big differential this weekend, whilst the majority of managers move Kane to Ronaldo, taking a gamble on Lukaku could really pay off. Lukaku is given a 54% chance of scoring by the bookies, the only players fancied to have a bigger chance of notching a goal are Mo Salah (63%) and Ronaldo (56%).
Once again I expect Mo Salah to be the most captained player and therefore he offers the safest captaincy option. However, Aston Villa are much improved under Steven Gerrard who'll desperately want to showcase his management skills in front of his inevitable future employers, so stepping away from Salah does have some substance this weekend. Personally, if I was to step away from Salah, it would be for Ronaldo who's fully rested against a Norwich defence who've conceded 143 shots inside their box (17th), the area where Ronaldo is at his deadliest. Those seeking a differential captaincy option however might want to consider a punt on Mount or Lukaku, who go up against a Leeds team that's missing their key defensive asset in Kalvin Phillips.
Whichever player you trust with the armband this weekend, I wish you all the very best! Good Luck!
