FPL Midfielders: Understanding Points per Million

If you read the first of our newly data driven articles, you will be aware of the concept of Points Per Million (PPM) and with last week’s offering focusing on the attack line, its now time to move further down the pitch.

In this article, we are going to carry out the same form of analysis for the midfield and once again aim to see who represents the best value of all the biggest names and who may be slightly overpriced.

As before, we’ve taken a sample of the 14 highest points scorers to date (data correct as of end Sunday 5th July) and with this insight, it may hopefully help your all-important picks for GW35 and beyond.

Whereas there was no positive correlation between value and points in attack (the theory being that the most expensive players would score the most points), there is a much stronger correlation here and the two highest valued midfielders are in the top three as far as overall points.

However, if we look at the players involved and the term ‘midfielders’, its almost as if the game is too rigid for modern-day formations and arguably Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane should be classed as forwards.

Therefore, due to their positional class and the more points on offer for goals scored in midfield, the Liverpool pair do seem to benefit from being classed as operating in the middle third – a benefit that usually translates to FPL managers all over the globe.

While Kevin De Bruyne’s arsenal of goals and assists sees him lead the overall points rank and another thing to consider, is the fact that players labeled as midfielders will have a far greater variation of playing roles.

With that said, the Belgian international does seem to be the exception to the rule in terms of our list of 14 and with every other name being either a wide forward or advanced midfielder, the comparison should not be too overly skewed.

Therefore, if we once again rank the sample group in terms of PPM.

Here you will see that it is Jack Grealish of Aston Villa who represents the most value and alongside both Wolves’ Adama Traore and Leicester’s Harvey Barnes, there are three bargain players for your consideration.

While the Liverpool pair of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah represent low value in terms of PPM. However, we need to be careful not to dismiss them from any selection, due to the incredible amount of points that they rack up both individually and as a pair.

Therefore, with the Liverpool pair scoring nearly 80 points more than the trio at the top of the adjusted PPM list, it probably makes sense to go with at least one of the Merseyside duo and then utilize a coupler of enablers such as Grealish or Traore.

Ultimately, it is about finding the balance between an incredible solo points haul and their PPM value,

which is why Kevin De Bruyne is arguably in the sweet spot of both – that is if you can second guess Pep Guardiola’s rotations.

Of course, we can look at this another way and if we compare the original points rank versus the PPM rank, we can see which midfielders benefit the most from this concept and which are arguably overvalued.

Here it is Adama Traore of Wolves who has made the biggest positive leap in terms of PPM vs points ranking followed by Jack Grealish of Aston Villa and Harvey Barnes of Leicester, again highlighting their hidden value.

Conclusion

While both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have seen the biggest negative swing when comparing the two measures. Although as we mentioned before, their points tallies are so high, it would be silly to dismiss them.

Therefore, to summarise, PPM has certainly highlighted a couple of rough diamonds for you to consider in these final few weeks, but at the same time, it is very hard to look past three current highest midfielders in the FPL universe.
